This new orchard is a living thing. Already robins and sparrows land on its branches. Hummingbirds and butterflies visit their new home. The fruit trees are healthy, promising a future bounty. The soil is worm rich, and the resident chickens continue to enrich it.
It is a good thing to add to life, rather than subtract, and I smile thinking of the small part I have played in it all. Make no mistake, I have done damage in my younger years but, in truth, so have we all. Many of us, this writer included, have failed to help the planet on a consistent basis. Small things, really, like not recycling at times, not conserving energy, nothing deliberate, mind you, but damage all the same.
One hopes, though, as the years advance, and awareness increases, and the absolute certainty that Earth cannot sustain much more damage without striking back at humans, that a concerted effort is undertaken to help Earth as much as possible and, to use a popular phrase, to have the smallest footprint possible as we march through life.
I do not hunt, don’t believe in it, cannot understand how someone could kill a deer or bear or bighorn sheep; having said that, I am fully aware of the hypocrisy as I dine on a cheeseburger. And I’m sure that’s true of most good people; they do what they can, make errors along the way, and hope it’s enough.
What I cannot abide by are the mega-corporations run by a Board of Directors and a CEO, all of whom know they are doing damage to the Earth and yet make no effort to stop and, before you point out a possible hypocrisy and say “but Bill, you buy from those corporations,” I will tell you that I make every effort not to and, if I do buy from a harmful corporation, I am not aware of their transgressions.
When I lived in Vermont, this being back in 1980, there was a statewide ban on major corporations. Not a McDonalds could be found. Why? Because the state leaders, and voters, did not want the pristine nature of their state raped by money-hungry behemoths with zero conscience. And I wonder, why more states do not adopt those measures and then, once sanity restores, I realize that the almighty dollar speaks louder than consciences.
A circuitous route to the point made earlier: the new orchard is a living thing, breathing thing, producing thing, and that is a good thing. And again, I wonder what would happen if more people were to plant a tree in their yards? Or what would happen if more people were to get rid of their lawns? Or if more people adopted solar or made more of an effort to conserve energy?
Anyway, I saw a Monarch Butterfly the other day, and that’s a very good thing. If you don’t know the story of the Monarch, and the Herculean journey it undertakes yearly, it’s worth reading about.
But then, I am just an old bear of very little brain, so I suppose I am just being silly in my musings.
Sis, I am a huge fan of the hummingbird. What a lovely creature it is. And I love the synchronicity of brother and sister, separated by thousands of miles, still as strong as when we were kids 🙂
Hugs coming your way
Ann, I truly do not know what I’m going to do about our upcoming election. I have never felt so meaningless with regards to my voting right. Greed runs this world, I’m afraid, and no matter who we elect, greed will continue to count more than the environment. Still, to give up is not an option.
Sigh
Blessings and thanks always

You? Silly? I don’t think so Bill! It’s important to remind us of all the things we do and shouldn’t and the things we don’t and should. I have a lawn but it’s old meadow land so it brings me buttercups and daisies and I observe ‘no mow May’ so have had a bumper crop of both this year! So lovely to see. I also grow fruit and veg though do not have enough room for loads; my raspberries do well and I have troughs of some veg which I vary each year.
I too try not to buy from big corporations which have no good track record. I also support local shops when I can. In fact, I’ve stopped buying all sorts of things – either I don’t need them (not good for me!) or I recycle much more. My wardrobe is full of really old clothes but most are ripe for revamping or repurposing, even if it’s just for rags! Lots have already gone to Ukraine, along with sheets etc.
We have an election coming up, as you probably know! I don’t want to vote for any of them as they lack the drive and the insight to do anything for the environment – plenty of talk but hardly any action. I’m aware that a vote is a precious privilege but who do I choose. No one has the personality nor the drive which is needed. I shall vote but for whom? Maybe Greens, maybe an independent – most people tell me that’s a wasted vote but if we all took heed of that, there wouldn’t ever be a change would there?
Thanks for reminding me of the beauty of our surroundings and for cheering me up with your positivity! You do that so well, Bill.
All the best to you and yours,
Ann
Well, Would you believe it??! I sat at my ceiling-to-floor Kitchen window, into my front yard…..as I read this lovely work of yours, bro………There, a short distance from me, “Hummingbirds!!” fluttering happily around their feeder, hung specifically for them! Honestly, I can watch them for hours…as well as all the other visitors who stop by to check out what goodies they might find!……………How many times have I said it, bro?? When I read what you share…..I AM RIGHT THERE WITH YOU!! How could I and the Hummingbirds have known you’d be mentioning them today?? This sort of synchronicity makes me giggle! Peace to you, Big Sis
